Top German Lawmaker's Aide Accused of Spying for China
Jian G Arrested on Suspicion of Espionage
Assistant to MEP Maximilian Krah Detained by Police
German police have arrested a close associate of a leading European lawmaker on suspicion of spying for China. The aide, identified as Jian G, is an assistant to Maximilian Krah, a member of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party and a candidate in the upcoming European elections. Prosecutors allege that Jian G has been engaged in espionage activities in Germany since 2019.
Interior Minister Nancy Faeser stated that if the allegations against Jian G are substantiated, it would constitute a "grave breach of trust." Krah, the AfD's top candidate in the European elections, has denied the accusations and expressed confidence in Jian G's innocence.
Jian G, 43, is a former businessman with dual German and Chinese citizenship. He has worked with Krah since his election to the European Parliament in 2019. Prosecutors declined to provide further details about the alleged espionage activities, citing ongoing investigations.
